The head of the Turkish bishops' conference was killed this month in southern Turkey.Catholic bishop Luigi Padovese was stabbed to death in his home in Iskenderun. The 63-year-old apostolic vicar had repeatedly called for more rights for Christians living in Turkey. Turkey, where most of the population is Muslim, has seen a number of attacks on Christian priests in previous years, but until recently, the situation seemed to have calmed down. The US Commission on International Religious Freedom had previously placed Turkey on its watch list.
